The Hialeah Thoroughbreds will venture away from home to challenge the Killian Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hialeah knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 31 points or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Killian likes a good challenge.
Killian better have a healthy lead at halftime, because if Hialeah's game on Thursday is any indication, that's when Hialeah really gets things going. Everything went the Thoroughbreds' way against American as they made off with a 35-12 victory. The result was nothing new for the Thoroughbreds, who have now won six contests by 21 points or more so far this season.
Meanwhile, the third road matchup was the charm for Killian, as they earned their first away win of the season. They strolled past Tampa Catholic with points to spare last Friday, taking the game 32-17.
Hialeah better keep an eye on Anton Smith. He was instrumental in Killian's win, rushing for 123 yards and one score on only nine carries, while also picking up 56 receiving yards. Smith's longest rush was for an impressive 50 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Willie Scott got in on the action as well, returning a kick for a touchdown.
Killian was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 269 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 200 rushing yards in three consecutive games.
Killian's defense made their presence known, laying out the QB five times. That dominant display was truly a team effort as five different players picked up one apiece. Another thorn in Tampa Catholic's side was Pedro Rivera, who picked up a sack and made 12 total tackles (4.0 for loss).
Hialeah pushed their record up to 6-2 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 8.7 points on average over those games. As for Killian, the victory was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 4-2.
Hialeah couldn't quite get it done against Killian in their previous matchup back in December of 2016 as they fell 19-11. Can the Thoroughbreds avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
