The Montwood Rams will head out to take on the Eastlake Falcons at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Montwood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.9 runs per game this season.
Montwood fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Socorro on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Bulldogs by a score of 8-7. The Rams' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Grace Ponzio was cooking despite her team's loss, firing off two home runs and three RBI while going 3-for-4. Those home runs were her first of the season. Trinity Munoz was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
Meanwhile, Eastlake entered their tilt with Coronado on Wednesday with three consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with four. They walked away with a 16-11 win over the Thunderbirds. 16 seems to be a good number for the Falcons as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Eastlake got a massive performance out of Charley Solis, who went 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those five RBI gave Solis a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Samantha Ponce, who scored three runs and stole four bases while going 3-for-5.
Eastlake kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive games.
Eastlake pushed their record up to 20-8 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Montwood, they suffered their first road loss, dropping their record down to 21-7.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Montwood hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.5 home runs per game. However, it's not like Eastlake struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Everything went Montwood's way against Eastlake in their previous meeting back in March, as Montwood made off with a 6-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rams since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
