In what's become a running theme this season, the Sunnyslope Vikings gave their fans yet another huge win on Thursday. They blew past Liberty 70-35 at home. Given Sunnyslope's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 33rd, while Liberty is ranked 154th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sunnyslope was led to victory by Maggie Luba and Teagan McIlroy. Luba scored 17 points along with four steals, while McIlroy dropped a triple-double on 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. McIlroy has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last ten times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Shannon McIlroy, who scored 11 points along with two steals.
Despite the defeat, Liberty saw an underclassman step up: Makenna Johnson scored 12 points along with six rebounds. Angelina Marsh was another key contributor, scoring five points along with two steals.
The victory makes it two in a row for Sunnyslope and bumps their season record up to 13-7. As for Liberty, their loss dropped their record down to 5-11.
Sunnyslope will head out on the road to square off against Boulder Creek at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Boulder Creek is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak. As for Liberty, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Sunrise Mountain at 5:30 p.m. on January 19th. Sunrise Mountain is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 52.5 points per game.
