Monte Vista is 0-10 against Pagosa Springs since January of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Monte Vista Pirates will head out on the road to square off against the Pagosa Springs Pirates at 5:30 p.m. Monte Vista is looking to tack on another W to their ten-game streak on the road dating back to last season.
Last Tuesday, Monte Vista beat Del Norte 44-37.
Monte Vista found their leader in underclassman Heysenny Beltran, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds and four blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Zariah Archuleta, who scored ten points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, Pagosa Springs put the finishing touches on their seventh blowout victory of the season on Saturday. They put the hurt on Montezuma-Cortez with a sharp 60-37 win. Given Pagosa Springs' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 41st, while Montezuma-Cortez is ranked 125th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Pagosa Springs got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Elizabeth Currier out in front who scored 23 points along with two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Currier has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Kylie Ketchum, who scored five points along with seven assists and seven steals.
Monte Vista's victory bumped their record up to 12-1. As for Pagosa Springs, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-4.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Monte Vista have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Pagosa Springs struggles in that department as they've been averaging 23 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Monte Vista took a serious blow against Pagosa Springs in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, falling 43-16. That match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Monte Vista was down 27-5.
