Pueblo South hasn't had much luck against Pueblo Central recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Colts will square off against the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. Pueblo South is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
If Pueblo South beats Pueblo Central with seven runs on Saturday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two matches with that exact score. The Colts won by a run and slipped past Mesa Ridge 7-6. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Colts.
The team relied heavily on Andrew Nolasco, who scored a run while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Caeden Herrera, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Pueblo Central got the win against Pueblo Centennial on Tuesday by a conclusive 13-1. That 12 run margin sets a new team best for the Wildcats this season.
Anthony Trujillo and Colton Calderon did most of the damage at the plate: Trujillo went a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI, one triple, and one stolen base, while Calderon went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs Calderon has posted since back in March. Jayce Ibarra also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Pueblo Central was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .406. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Pueblo Centennial only posted a batting average of .125.
Pueblo Central's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-5-1. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Pueblo South, their record is now 11-3.
Saturday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Pueblo South has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .454. However, it's not like Pueblo Central struggles in that department as they've averaged .433. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Pueblo South might still be hurting after the 10-3 loss they got from Pueblo Central in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Colts avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
