Wheeler is 0-8 against Pine Grove since March of 2016 but things could change on Tuesday. The Eagles will square off against the Panthers at 7:00 p.m. Wheeler is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
Wheeler blew Falkner out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Friday Falkner got their revenge. Wheeler fell just short of Falkner by a score of 3-1. Having soared to a lofty 12 runs in the game before, Wheeler couldn't push the score so high this time.
Wheeler saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Peirce Spencer, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Spencer has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played.
Meanwhile, Pine Grove entered their tilt with Walnut on Monday with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. They came out on top against the Wildcats by a score of 12-7.
Ayden Jones was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Jones was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and one double. He has become a key player for Pine Grove: the team is 9-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-8 otherwise.
In other batting news, Pine Grove got a massive performance out of Riggs Childs, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run. Another player making a difference was Talen Wilkerson, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Pine Grove always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .605. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Wheeler's loss dropped their record down to 11-7. As for Pine Grove, their record is now 12-9.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Wheeler has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .450. However, it's not like Pine Grove struggles in that department as they've averaged .440. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wheeler might still be hurting after the 19-4 defeat they got from Pine Grove when the teams last played back in April of 2022. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
