The Southern Lab Kittens waltzed into Thursday's matchup with five straight wins but they left with six. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 33-31 victory over Kentwood. This was one game where the offenses had no trouble playing at a high level.
Southern Lab's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was J?rome Harris jr, who rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown on only 12 carries. Armariyan Asberry and his 97 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Southern Lab's victory.
When it comes to explaining why Kentwood lost, one person who can't be blamed is Ke'vante Carter. Despite the final result, he rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown on only five carries, and also picked up 138 receiving yards and a touchdown. Carter was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 64 yards. Shemar Cooper also helped out as he racked up 112 receiving yards.
Even if they lost, Kentwood's defensive line sure didn't make it easy: Southern Lab's QB was sacked five times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Lamikal Callahan and his four sacks.
Southern Lab's victory was their fourth straight on the road , which pushed their record up to 8-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 44.5 points per game. As for Kentwood, their defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-2.
Southern Lab will take on Slaughter Community Charter at TBD on Friday. Slaughter Community Charter will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Louisiana Rankings (they are ranked 223rd, while Southern Lab is ranked 54th). As for Kentwood, they will head out on the road to face off against Central Private at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
