The Muir Mustangs will venture away from home to face off against the Serrano Diamondbacks at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Muir is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
Muir came into this matchup off a tough ten-run defeat on Tuesday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of Mark Keppel by a score of 4-2 on Monday. The Mustangs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Gianna (GiGi) Butler put in work no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched 6.1 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. Butler was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one RBI.
Butler wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Abigail (Abi) Milton, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one double. That double was Milton's first of the season.
Meanwhile, Serrano had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.2 runs) and they went ahead and made it seven two weeks ago. They put the hurt on the Cougars with a sharp 19-8 victory. The result was nothing new for the Diamondbacks, who have now won five contests by nine runs or more so far this season.
Like Muir, Serrano also got a great game from a two-way player: Sam Conan. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Conan has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Serrano got a massive performance out of Cody Ramirez, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Carlie Moore, who went 4-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles.
Serrano was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .610. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in five consecutive games.
Serrano pushed their record up to 7-5 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Muir, their loss dropped their record down to 7-3.
Tuesday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Muir has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .465. However, it's not like Serrano struggles in that department as they've averaged .602. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Muir came up short against Serrano in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, falling 5-1. Can Muir avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
