The Meigs Marauders are taking a road trip to take on the Portsmouth Trojans at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Meigs is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.4 runs per game this season.
Meigs is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 11 runs on Tuesday, they were much more limited against Vinton County on Friday. They fell 6-1 to the Vikings. The contest marked the Marauders' lowest-scoring match so far this season.
Meigs saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Bella Roush, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Portsmouth ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They had just enough and edged out Gallia Academy 8-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Trojans have posted since March 30, 2024.
Katie Ankrom spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered seven earned runs on eight hits and racked up 12 Ks. Those 12 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.
At the plate, Bailey Waughtel was excellent, scoring three runs while going 3-for-5. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Caitlyn Galloway, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-4.
Portsmouth kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in three consecutive games.
Meigs' defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 7-3. As for Portsmouth, their record is now 3-6.
Portsmouth's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Meigs has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .464. It's a different story for Portsmouth, though, as they've only averaged .358. Will they be able to contain Meigs' hitters?
Everything went Meigs' way against Portsmouth in their previous meeting back in April of 2023, as Meigs made off with an 8-2 win. Do the Marauders have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Trojans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
