South Anchorage has gone a perfect 10-0 against Wasilla recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Wolverines are taking a road trip to take on the Warriors at 6:30 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as South Anchorage comes in on 12 and Wasilla on four.
South Anchorage is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Alaska's top teams: Chugiak, who was ranked 14th at the time (South Anchorage was ranked first). The Wolverines sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Mustangs on Saturday. Those two runs were actually the fewest the Wolverines have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
David Feigner looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jack Zuspan, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Wasilla earned an 11-7 win over West Valley on Saturday.
Ramon Guzman made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up six earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
In other batting news, LaLo PaLomares was incredible, going 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and three RBI. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hunter Delcour, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
South Anchorage's victory was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-0. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games. As for Wasilla, their record is now 10-3-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. South Anchorage has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Wasilla struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went South Anchorage's way against Wasilla in their previous matchup back in April, as South Anchorage made off with a 14-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolverines since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
