Overland is 1-9 against the Cougars since January of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Overland Trailblazers will head out on the road to square off against the Cherokee Trail Cougars at 5:30 p.m. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Overland has struggled recently with four defeats in a row, while the Cougars will arrive with seven straight wins.
Last Saturday, Overland was beaten by the Wolves 65-33. Overland was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 41-11.
Despite the defeat, Overland had strong showings from Michaela Halton, who scored nine points along with three steals, and Aziza Abdur-Razaaq, who scored six points along with two steals. Abdur-Razaaq continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played.
Meanwhile, Cherokee Trail faced the Warriors in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Cherokee Trail came out on top against the Warriors by a score of 52-43 on Saturday.
Cherokee Trail's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Delainey Miller, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds. Aaliyah Broadus was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Overland's defeat dropped their record down to 11-6. As for Cherokee Trail, their victory was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-2.
Overland was taken down by the Cougars 67-35 in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. The match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Overland was down 33-8.
