Even though the Mt. Zion Bulldogs scored an imposing 67 points on Friday, the Lovett Lions still came out on top. Lovett walked away with a 77-67 victory over Mt. Zion. Given Lovett's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 169th, while Mt. Zion is ranked 401st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Lovett's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Landyn Murphy, who scored 14 points along with six assists and six rebounds. Ryan Cain was another key contributor, scoring 15 points.
When it comes to explaining why Mt. Zion lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jaki Bell. Despite the final result, he scored 26 points. Bell has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Devante Burgest, who scored ten points.
The win makes it two in a row for Lovett and bumps their season record up to 10-8. As for Mt. Zion, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-14.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lovett will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against McDonough at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd. McDonough is coming into the game hot, having won their last seven games. As for Mt. Zion, they will head out on the road to challenge Stockbridge at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Stockbridge is out to stop a eight-game streak of losses at home.
