The South County Stallions are taking a road trip to take on the West Springfield Spartans at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. South County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
South County's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They blew past Fairfax 15-0. The Stallions have beaten the Lions the last eight times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Lions has come to flipping the script.
Julia Niner was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (three). She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and two doubles.
In other batting news, Ava Abromavage was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. What's more, she posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in March. Oksana Rodriguez also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
South County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, West Springfield hadn't done well against Lake Braddock recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Spartans walked away with a 5-1 win over the Bruins. The victory was familiar territory for the Spartans, who have now won three contests in a row.
Elaina Primozic spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up six Ks.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kate Middendorf, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Natalie Coughlin, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double.
South County now has a winning record of 8-7. As for West Springfield, their record is now 14-3.
Tuesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. South County hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .381. However, it's not like West Springfield struggles in that department as they've averaged .412. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
South County skirted past West Springfield 8-7 when the teams last played back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Stallions since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
