FINAL THOUGHTThe
Plano East girls bowling team won the Texas High School Bowling club championship in Euless over the weekend and the
Carroll (Southlake) hockey team finished second at the USA Hockey High School National Championship in Bensenville, Ill. With their success, some fans are again asking if the University Interscholastic League will ever adopt these sports. As it is now, bowling and hockey are club sports that the UIL doesn't sanction.
The UIL is waiting to see more participating in those sports, as well as others such as lacrosse and gymnastics. Bowling now has participation numbers that rival some other sports that are sanctioned by the UIL, but it's unlikely that any sport will be added soon.
School districts simply aren't in position to add sports right now. It's quite the opposite, as some are considering dropping sports or freshman or JV teams because of tight budgets.
