Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for the Santana Sultans, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They had to suffer through a rough 37-6 loss at the hands of Mount Miguel. Having soared to a lofty 35 points in the game before, Santana couldn't push the score so high this time.
Alex Rico threw for 63 yards and a touchdown on only four passes. Michael Valenzuela was his top target, picking up 63 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Mount Miguel was led to victory by Matthew Barton and Zane Rottier. Barton rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown on only six carries, while Rottier rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.1 yards per carry. The team also got some help courtesy of Parris Vernon, who gained 55 total yards and two touchdowns.
Santana has been struggling recently, as they've lost six of their last seven matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-7 record this season. As for Mount Miguel, the victory (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 11-1.
Santana does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Mount Miguel will face off against Chula Vista at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Chula Vista will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 340th, while Mount Miguel is ranked 156th).
