Coventry has gone a perfect 6-0 against St. Raphael Academy recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Oakers will look to defend their home field against the Saints at 4:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Coventry is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Ponaganset, who was ranked 18th at the time (Coventry was ranked eighth). The Oakers never let the Chieftains get on the board and left with a 12-0 win on Monday. Winning may never get old, but the Oakers sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Coventry got a big performance out of LiLyana BeLL, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Mary Mcgovern, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Coventry always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .560. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ponaganset only posted an OBP of .250.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last game, St. Raphael Academy made sure to put some runs up on the board against Scituate on Monday. The Saints put the hurt on the Spartans with a sharp 14-1 victory. With that win, the Saints brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.
Emma Martin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Avalynn Guatieri, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Sophie Roman, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
St. Raphael Academy pushed their record up to 12-2 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.1 runs on average over those games. As for Coventry, their victory bumped their record up to 11-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Coventry has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Raphael Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Coventry's way against St. Raphael Academy when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Coventry made off with an 11-1 win. Will the Oakers repeat their success, or do the Saints have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
