Makenna Ondrey made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 17 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Caitlin Talty, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Mya Zavada was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two runs.
Meanwhile, after a string of six wins, Wilmington's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They lost 12-6 to Morris. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Wildcats, who until this matchup were averaging 3.44 runs allowed.
Molly Southall made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two doubles. The team also got some help courtesy of Keeley Walsh, who went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Wilmington's loss dropped their record down to 19-6. As for Streator, their victory bumped their record up to 8-17.
Wilmington's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Streator has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Wilmington, though, as they've been averaging only 2.9 strikeouts. Will Streator keep running through batters, or will the Wildcats buck the trend?
Streator might still be hurting after the 12-3 defeat they got from Wilmington in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can the Bulldogs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
