After a string of four wins, the McDonough Rams's good fortune finally ran out on Wednesday. They fell just short of Westlake by a score of 46-44. McDonough was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Westlake apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2023.
When it comes to explaining why McDonough lost, one person who can't be blamed is Cailyn Samuel. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten steals. That was a full 40.9% of McDonough's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Jalynn Rosier was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Raynna Ratchford was her usual excellent self, scoring 17 points along with eight rebounds and five steals for Westlake. Ratchford has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Akeylah McPherson, who scored seven points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
McDonough's loss dropped their record down to 7-4. As for Westlake, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-5.
McDonough will head out on the road to face off against Huntingtown at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Huntingtown focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up nine on Wednesday. As for Westlake, they the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome Chopticon at 6:30 p.m. on January 26th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Maryland (Chopticon is ranked 179th, while Westlake is ranked 199th).
