Maple Mountain posted their closest win yet this season on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Manti 45-43. Given Maple Mountain's advantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 28th, while Manti is ranked 86th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jaynee Tanner continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, dropping a double-double on 18 points and 14 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Shay Brown, who scored 11 points along with two steals.
Meanwhile, Springville's 23-3 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They fell 38-30 to Spanish Fork on Tuesday. Springville has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite their defeat, Springville saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Bella Esplin, who scored four points along with five assists and two steals, was perhaps the best of all. Brynn Johnson was another key contributor, scoring ten points.
Maple Mountain's victory was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-3. As for Springville, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-10.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Maple Mountain have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 35.8 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Springville struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 30.6 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Maple Mountain was dealt a bruising 57-27 loss at the hands of Springville in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. Thankfully for Maple Mountain, Kayla Porray (who scored 18 points along with three steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
