Baseball Game Preview: St. Mary's Knights vs. Sahuaro Cougars

The St. Mary's Knights will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against the Sahuaro Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (St. Mary's has five straight wins, Sahuaro has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

St. Mary's had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 19-run drubbing they dealt Coronado on Tuesday. St. Mary's pitcher stepped up to hand Coronado a 19-0 shutout. That looming 19-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Knights yet this season.

Luis Mejia was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-4. Those four runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Zach Tanner, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, one triple, and one stolen base.

Mejia wasn't the only one working in the hit department: St. Mary's kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits every time they've taken the field this season.

Meanwhile, Sahuaro lost a heartbreaker to Desert View when they met back in March of 2019, and they left with a heavy heart again on Tuesday. Sahuaro came up short against Desert View, falling 13-4.

Luis Morales was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run and stealing Two bases. while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

St. Mary's pushed their record up to 5-0 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Sahuaro, their loss dropped their record down to 0-5.
