The Wolcott Eagles will challenge the St. Paul Catholic Falcons at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Wolcott 3.8, St. Paul Catholic 3.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
St. Paul Catholic will be up against a hot Wolcott squad: the team just extended their winning streak to three. The Eagles' pitcher stepped up to hand Torrington a 4-0 shutout on Friday.
The result came thanks to Avery Malenfant's shutout, as she gave up just a hit and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Ava Shea, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with two runs and one double. Brayden Keeley was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Meanwhile, St. Paul Catholic made easy work of Derby on Thursday and carried off a 19-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Falcons, who have now won nine matches by seven runs or more so far this season.
Isabella McCulloch was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Julia Kozlak, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base.
St. Paul Catholic hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in five consecutive contests.
St. Paul Catholic pushed their record up to 10-1 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.5 runs on average over those games. As for Wolcott, their win bumped their record up to 8-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Wolcott has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Paul Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Wolcott couldn't quite get it done against St. Paul Catholic when the teams last played back in April as they fell 15-10. Will the Eagles have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
