The Legacy Lightning will venture away from home to square off against the Broomfield Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Legacy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.5 runs per game this season.
Legacy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Colorado's top teams: Erie, who was ranked 25th at the time (Legacy was ranked 17th). The Lightning came up short against the Tigers on Saturday, falling 14-3. The Lightning's defeat signaled the end of their ten-game winning streak.
Legacy got a good showing from Hudson Griffith, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the fewest earned runs Griffith has allowed since back in March.
At the plate, Legacy saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jack Schoenheider, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, Broomfield came tearing into Saturday's contest with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.2 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Knights with a sharp 14-4 win. 14 seems to be a good number for the Eagles as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Broomfield also got a great performance from Maverick Scarpella as he struck out six batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. Scarpella has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Brendan Fritch was incredible, firing off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of JC Smith, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
Broomfield's win was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-3. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Legacy, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 11-5.
Legacy came out on top in a nail-biter against Broomfield when the teams last played back in April of 2024, sneaking past 6-5. Will the Lightning repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
