Hoke County hasn't had much luck against Richmond recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Hoke County Bucks will head out to face off against the Richmond Raiders at 7:00 p.m. Hoke County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.5 runs per game this season.
Hoke County barely beat Lee County the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Hoke County blew past Lee County 11-1 on Friday. The Bucks have beaten the Yellow Jackets the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Yellow Jackets has come to flipping the script.
Niya Jones spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Shaniya Mclean, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Brianna Harrell, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Richmond came up short against Pinecrest on Friday and fell 12-9.
Madee Pearson put in work while hitting and pitching. She pitched two innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-5.
In other batting news, Kalynn McCormick was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. She also put up two doubles, which were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Lexi Smith, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Even though they lost, Richmond kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 14 hits in three consecutive matchups.
Hoke County's win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-1. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games. As for Richmond, their loss dropped their record down to 1-4.
Richmond's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Hoke County has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.7 hits per game. It's a different story for Richmond, though, as they've been averaging 9.2 hits. Given Hoke County's sizable advantage in that area, Richmond will need to find a way to close that gap.
Hoke County might still be hurting after the 8-0 defeat they got from Richmond in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Hoke County avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
