The Gresham Gophers will take on the Lake Oswego Lakers at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Gresham is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Gresham was able to grind out a solid win over Roseburg, taking the game 7-3.
Despina Seufalemua spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Daya Nelson, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of La Terra Foster-Frison, who scored a run while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Gresham always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Roseburg only posted an OBP of .312.
Meanwhile, Lake Oswego waltzed into their contest on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Saxons a 15-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Lakers, who have now won three matches by 11 runs or more so far this season.
Ava Beach looked comfortable as she struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Sydney Perlewitz was a standout: she scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more stolen bases the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Macy Maxwell, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Gresham has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Lake Oswego, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-2.
Friday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Gresham has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .565. However, it's not like Lake Oswego struggles in that department as they've averaged .469. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
