Southaven scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Columbus, 17-7. At the time, the Falcons was ranked 18th in the state, while the Chargers was 35th.
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Tupelo, who took down 33rd ranked Grenada, 35-14. Otis Wilson ran for 51 yards and caught one passes for seven yards in the win.
Rip Kirk put up the best numbers through the air as South Panola bested Olive Branch. He finished with five completions for 51 yards and one touchdown. Kirk's favorite target this week was DeAndrea Harris, who caught two passes for 22 yards.
Zach Johnson was the best wideout in 6A Region 1 this week as the Golden Wave defeated the Chargers. Johnson racked up three receptions for 24 yards.
Nathan Vanderburg was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 248 yards on 23 carries as DeSoto Central beat Grenada. Teammate Kendal Bunch added to the ground attack by rushing for 190 yards.
6-foot-2 quarterback Payne Horan of the Chargers is the league leader in passing yards this season with 697. He has also thrown seven touchdowns. On the ground, the Jaguars' Vanderburg has rushed for 697 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Harris. The South Panola star has 31 catches for 361 yards.
The marquee game in 6A Region 1 this week will be the clash between the Tigers and Columbus. South Panola comes into the matchup ranked third in the state, while Tony Stanford 's team ranks 20th.
There should be lots of points scored when the Conquistadors and DeSoto Central face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Olive Branch comes in having scored 185 this season, while Matt Wallace's team has scored 161. Scott Samsel's team scored 14 points last week as it lost to Lance Pogue's team.
Southaven was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating the Falcons 17-7. Ed Rich's team came in at 23 in the state poll after placing at number 35 last week.
