Wrestling: Sachem At it Again
After years of New York State domination on the wrestling mat, Section XI's Sachem took a spill when the district split, creating a new Sachem East, along with the old North.
It's been three years and all signs are pointing in the right direction for North, who is one dual meet win away from winning its first League crown since the split.
Most of North's wrestlers are seniors, so the time is now to win. The last two years have been rebuilding seasons and the program certainly utilized the time. With a coaching staff filled with Sachem graduates and wrestlers like Justin Nelson (135 pounds), Pat Barry (125) and Mike Piro (112) leading the charge, the Suffolk tournament should be interesting.
Boys' Basketball: Barbers Still Firing
After last week's mentioning of Wyandanch's Chris and Cameron Barber, they came out on fire as usual, but raised their point totals against Port Jefferson in an 82-67 win. Chris scored 33, while Cameron had 28 and 10 boards. Wyandanch is 7-0 in league play.
All-Around Effort for Whitman's Green
Look at Kyheem Green's stat line from Whitman's (5-1) game against Northport (4-2) and you'll see he scored 18 points, just a typical game for him. But keep looking, and you'll see he grabbed 17 rebounds and had five blocked shots in the 60-46 win. He had an all out dominant performance in a tough battle against one of Suffolk's best teams.
Sands Nets 30, Reaches 1,000 Career Points
The Carey-Roslyn game was important enough without the thought of Mike Sands gunning for his 1,000th career point. He needed more than 25 to reach the milestone and that meant a good offensive showing against a great defensive team in Roslyn. He did it though, scoring 30, in a 63-42 win. Carey is 8-4, while Roslyn drops to 5-8.
Boothe and Cavataio Face-Off
Christ the King's Malik Boothe and St. Francis Prep's Mike Cavataio will both play at St. John's next season. This season, however, they're rivals. Red Storm head coach Norm Roberts was on hand to watch CTK beat St. Francis 64-51 in Middle Village, Queens the other night and he was probably anxious to see two of his top recruits battle it out. As for the players, they took it like any other game, going up against another top player.
Girls' Basketball: Glenn's Athanas Reaches Milestone
Glenn girls' basketball coach Andy Athanas doesn't really know how to lose. Since 2004 Glenn has gone 55-4 and he earned career win No. 200 last week in a 51-44 win over Westhampton. In the same game, Westhampton's Jennifer Polan scored the 1000th point of her career.
Milestone for LIL's Zillas
Patricia Zillas entered Long Island Lutheran's game against Kew Forest (Queens) needing just eight points to reach the 1,000 point plateau for her career. She scored 10 in the 63-19 lopsided win and her team improved to 7-0 in the IPPSAL.
Prahalis Reaches Another Goal
Commack (6-0) junior Samantha Prahalis had 24 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the Panthers' 65-29 win over Connetquot (2-4). The box scored showed nothing new, all Prahalis, all night. However, she scored career point No. 1,500 on a three-point shot in the fourth quarter. She could be on pace to break some Suffolk County and Long Island records come this time next year.
Three Schools Still Unbeaten
While East Hampton is the only boys' team without a loss on the Island, the girls' side of the ball is still holding strong. Huntington, Massapequa and North Babylon have not lost a game yet. Which one will stay undefeated? Most feel Massapequa will, but there is really no way to tell. The strength of schedules for each team are relatively equal.
Boys' Swimming: Consistency at Chaminade
The Flyers clinched their sixth straight undefeated season and 54th dual meet in a row after beating Fordham Prep (Bronx), 101-85. Chaminade's Dan Wallace won the 200-yard free in 1:50.3.
