Calhan and Crowley County are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Bulldogs will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against the Chargers at 4:00 p.m. Calhan has given up an average of 12.5 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Calhan came up short against Simla on Saturday, falling 19-3. The defeat continues a trend for the Bulldogs in their meetings with the Cubs: they've now lost five in a row.
Calhan saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Toby Monger, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base. Donnie Fink also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Las Animas typically has all the answers at home, but on Saturday Crowley County proved too difficult a challenge. They had just enough and edged out the Trojans 6-4.
Landon Smith spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Derreck Buford, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Tritt Buhr, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Crowley County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Crowley County has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Calhan, their loss dropped their record down to 3-12-2.
Calhan suffered a grim 17-2 defeat to Crowley County in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Bulldogs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
