The Sand Point Eagles/Lady Eagles won the last time they faced the Bristol Bay Angels, and things went their way on Saturday too. Sand Point narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Bristol Bay 48-46.
Sand Point's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Precious Kaminanga led the charge by scoring ten points along with eight rebounds and five steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Kaminanga has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Morgan Gundersen, who scored ten points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Despite the defeat, Bristol Bay saw an underclassman step up: Olivia Harvilla scored 22 points. That was a full 47.8% of Bristol Bay's points, marking the ninth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Brooke Phelps was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Sand Point has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season. As for Bristol Bay, their loss dropped their record down to 3-6.
Sand Point will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Birchwood Christian at 4:00 p.m. on January 30th. Hopefully Sand Point is not getting complacent considering they own a much higher rank in Alaska (they are ranked 32nd, while Birchwood Christian is ranked 89th). Bristol Bay's road trip will continue as they head out to face Tri-Valley on February 1st. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Alaska (Tri-Valley is ranked 56th, while Bristol Bay is ranked 71st).
