Union County hasn't had much luck against Trenton recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The two teams will compete for holiday cheer at 7:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both will really light up the scoreboard.
Trenton is hoping to do what Lafayette couldn't on Monday: put an end to Union County's winning streak, which now stands at three games. Union County blew past Lafayette 60-39. With the Fightin' Tigers ahead 38-17 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Union County's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Gavin Jenkins led the charge by going 6 for 12 on his way to 13 points and six steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jeppson Dang, who posted 15 points.
Union County was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lafayette only posted six assists.
Meanwhile, Trenton was just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 69-68 to Interlachen. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Tigers came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 106th, while the Rams are ranked 238th).
Union County will have to contain Nathan Ridgell as he made an impact in Trenton's last game. He dropped a double-double on 21 points and 11 boards. That's the most points Ridgell has posted since back in December of 2023. Mason VunCannon was another key player, dropping a double-double on 17 points and 11 boards.
This is the second loss in a row for Trenton and nudges their season record down to 4-3. As for Union County, their win bumped their record up to 3-0.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Union County hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 55.7 points per game. However, it's not like Trenton struggles in that department as they've been averaging 63.3 points. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Union County came up short against Trenton in their previous meeting back in January, falling 55-48. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of VunCannon, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 14 boards.
