Salida is 1-7 against La Junta since March of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Spartans will be playing at home against the Tigers at 10:00 a.m. Salida is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Salida's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Platte Canyon with a sharp 16-0 win. The Spartans have beaten the Huskies the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Huskies has come to flipping the script.
Matthew Edgington was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Edgington was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Salida got a massive performance out of Orion Post, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave Post a new career-high. Anthony Taverna was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Salida always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .655. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Platte Canyon only posted an OBP of .083.
Meanwhile, La Junta came up short against Buena Vista on Tuesday and fell 6-2.
La Junta also got a good showing from Treyce Lovato, who pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those zero earned runs gave Lovato a new career-low.
On the hitting side, La Junta saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Eli Stokes, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
La Junta has also been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-14 record this season. As for Salida, their victory bumped their record up to 9-7.
Salida's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's contest. The Spartans have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for La Junta, though, as they've been averaging only 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Salida continue to outrun the ball?
