Winning is just a little bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 19 to 8 on the offensive boards, a fact the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Red Devils proved on Friday. They came out on top against Cortland by a score of 51-41. The win made it back-to-back wins for Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.
Eliijah Donegan was a one-man wrecking crew for Vernon-Verona-Sherrill as he dropped a double-double on 40 points and 17 rebounds. The matchup was Donegan's third in a row with at least ten points. Leland Hitchings was another key contributor, scoring two points along with six steals and five rebounds.
Despite the loss, Cortland saw an underclassman step up: Owen Johnson scored 12 points along with seven rebounds. Those 12 points set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Cal Albright, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
The victory got Vernon-Verona-Sherrill back to even at 3-3. As for Cortland, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-6.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Vernon-Verona-Sherrill will finish 2023 at home by hosting Schalmont at 11:45 a.m. on Friday. Cortland will finish 2023 at home by hosting Groton at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday. Groton comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
