MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Whitehaven (Memphis, Tenn.) Tigers have officially been named to the 12th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its 12th year honoring football.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the
MaxPreps National Rankings. For football, only 50 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 17,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the
ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
Whitehaven capped an undefeated season with a close 12-9 win over Oakland for the 2016 TSSAA Division I Class 6A state title on Saturday, Dec. 3rd. The Patriots proved to be the team's toughest challenge as the Tigers easily outmatched and outscored their opponents 505-130 overall, including 168-45 in the postseason.
The Tigers finished the year ranked No.1 in Class 6A, No.2 in the state, No.25 in the South Region and No.76 in the nation. After leading the team to a perfect 15-0, state championship season, Head coach Rodney Saulsberry was named the 2016 Tennessee Titans High School Coach of the Year.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Whitehaven Tigers an invitation to the 12th Annual Tour of Champions. This will be the second time the Tigers are honored by MaxPreps and the National Guard as they were also named to the 2012-13 Football Tour.
Please join us as we celebrate with the football team, coaching staff, students and fans on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. during a school assembly in the gym.
