The St. Petersburg Green Devils entered their tilt with the Gibbs Gladiators with seven consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with eight. St. Petersburg came out on top against Gibbs by a score of 27-14 on Friday. Given St. Petersburg's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 140th, while Gibbs is ranked 342nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Jeff Jones, who rushed for 254 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 15.9 yards per carry, and also threw for 78 yards and a touchdown while completing 75% of his passes. Jones hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for ten straight games. Another player making a difference was Vontavious Ducksworth, who gained 58 total yards and two touchdowns.
Another reason for the win was St. Petersburg's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Leading the way was Patrick Walker and his three sacks.
St. Petersburg's win was their fourth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 8-2. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-10 Hollins and 1-8 Gibbs (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 30.3% over those games). As for Gibbs, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-8.
St. Petersburg does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Gibbs also has no future games currently scheduled.
