The St. John's Cadets are ranked highly in their home state, and on Friday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of the Bishop Ireton Cardinals. St. John's took a 69-57 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cardinals. It was the first time this season that St. John's let down their fans at home.
St. John's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaidyn Harper, who scored 15 points. Harper is trending in the right direction, as she's improved her point production for three games straight. The team also got some help courtesy of Morgan Stewart, who scored nine points along with six assists and six rebounds.
Bishop Ireton's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Nyla Brooks led the charge by scoring 20 points. Amirah Anderson was another key contributor, scoring 16 points.
St. John's defeat ended a 16-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 12-5. As for Bishop Ireton, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 12-6.
St. John's will be playing in front of their home fans against the Knights at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday. St. Mary's Ryken is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 57.6 points per game this season. As for Bishop Ireton, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against the Quakers at 6:00 p.m. on January 27th. Sidwell Friends will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
