The Mohave Thunderbirds's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their eighth straight loss. They took a serious blow against Prescott, falling 84-42. Mohave was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 44-19.
Despite the defeat, Mohave saw an underclassman step up: Devon Cook scored 18 points along with eight rebounds. That's the first time this season that Cook pulled down eight or more rebounds. Pedro Marentes was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Prescott was led to victory by Zane Gaul and Uriah Tenette. Gaul dropped a double-double on 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Tenette scored 30 points along with eight steals and six assists. That makes it four consecutive games in which Tenette has scored at least a third of Prescott's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Costa Contreras, who scored six points along with four steals.
Mohave has been struggling recently, as they've lost ten of their last 12 matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-13 record this season. As for Prescott, the win (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 16-3.
Mohave and Mingus will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 22nd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Mingus is on a four-game streak of home losses, Mohave a ten-game streak of away losses, but someone's luck is about to change. Prescott will take on Coconino at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Coconino will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 156th, while Prescott is ranked 32nd).
