2A District 1 recap October 29, 2013
Laguna Acoma extended the longest winning streak in 2A District 1 this week by beating Zuni, 53-0. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Hawks.
The Thunderbirds fell to Laguna Acoma 53-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Tohatchi's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Justin Smith threw for 106 and 2 touchdowns and Aaron Yazzie had 44 yards receiving. On the ground Luke Gibson chipped in 61 yards. Marcus Burbank helped Tohatchi's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 36 yards.
Gibson was the best running back in the league this week. In 4 carries, he ran for 61 yards as the Cougars topped Ramah. Teammate Daniel Lee added to the ground attack by rushing for 25 yards.
Tohatchi's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Cougars feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 1,178 yards and 18 touchdowns this season, while Burbank has 20 catches for 584 yards. Smith also leads the league in rushing with 434 yards.
A big matchup in 2A District 1 this week will be when Crownpoint takes on Tohatchi. The Eagles are in third place, while Mark Chandler's team is in first place.
Roger Cordova's team led the league in scoring this week by notching 53 points on Zuni.
