Rancho Buena Vista and Carlsbad are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2017, but likely not for long. The Longhorns will be playing in front of their home fans against the Lancers at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Rancho Buena Vista's pitching crew has only allowed 2.7 runs per game this season, so Carlsbad's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
On Thursday, Rancho Buena Vista came up short against Torrey Pines and fell 5-1. The loss continues a trend for the Longhorns in their meetings with the Falcons: they've now lost four in a row.
Maizie Smith made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Carlsbad had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3.7 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Monday. They blew past the Wildcats 10-4. Carlsbad's victory was all the more impressive since the Wildcats were averaging only 3.6 runs allowed on the season.
Carlsbad also got a great performance from Ingrid Black as she pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Black has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Emerson Jarrard was incredible, going 3-for-4 with four runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Grace Lehman was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
Carlsbad kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They are 4-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Carlsbad pushed their record up to 7-13 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Rancho Buena Vista, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-10.
Carlsbad's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Rancho Buena Vista has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.2 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Carlsbad, though, as they've been averaging only 2.1 strikeouts. Will Rancho Buena Vista keep running through batters, or will the Lancers buck the trend?
Rancho Buena Vista took their win against Carlsbad in their previous matchup back in April by a conclusive 10-2 score. Do the Longhorns have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Lancers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
