1A Region 1 recap Oct. 16, 2012
Falkner extended the longest winning streak in 1A Region 1 this week by beating Tupelo Christian Prep, 39-14. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Eagles.
Vardaman took down Biggersville 55-20 last week, the largest margin of any game. Cody Jenkins threw for 67 yards and one touchdown and ran for 182 yards in the win.
Blake Stacy put up the best numbers through the air as the Lions lost to the Rams. He finished with a total of five completions for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Stacy's favorite target this week was Darion Barnett, who caught three passes for 68 yards.
RJ Johnson was the best wideout in the league this week as Houlka fell to Smithville. Johnson racked up three receptions for 83 yards. Mauricus Harris helped Houlka's passing attack out by catching three balls for 30 yards.
6-foot-1 quarterback Stacy of Biggersville is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1204. He has also thrown 19 touchdowns. On the ground, Falkner's Jeramie Lawrence has rushed for 1475 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is James Avant. The Vardaman star has 16 catches for 376 yards.
Two of the top units in 1A Region 1 will face off this week when Ben Ashley's team takes on Thrasher. The Eagles' offense has scored 320 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Rebels have allowed only 87 on the year.
Coldwater's Marcel Newson needs only 39 yards against Byers next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Newson has rushed for 961 yards on 84 carries so far this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Falkner takes on Thrasher. The Eagles are in first place, while Lamart Harvey's team is in third place.
The Lions made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 11,815 from 11,959. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 22-6 victory over the Rebels last week.
