He may not have had eye-popping statistics like some of the other quarterbacks in the state this year, but there is no doubting the importance of Brad Kaaya to the Chaminade offensive attack.
In leading the Eagles to a 14-2 record and the school's first football state championship, Kaaya came up big in the big games. In the Western Division championship, Kaaya threw for 311 yards in a win over favored Serra (Gardena). The Cavaliers had defeated Chaminade earlier in the season, but Kaaya helped his team outscore Serra 24-7 in the second half for the win.
In the state finals against Enterprise, Kaaya threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns in beating the Hornets 41-9. Kaaya was named the player of the year by the Los Angeles Daily News and the Southern Section Western Division coaches. He also earns the MaxPreps Division II State Player of the Year honor for his efforts.
Coach of the Year honors for Division II go to Enterprise (Redding) coach Darren Trueblood. In guiding the Hornets to a 13-1 record, Trueblood became the first Northern Section coach to ever win a NorCal or state playoff game with a 27-21 victory over Manteca in the NorCal championship game. His team's 13 wins also tied a section record for most wins in a season.
The MaxPreps California Division II All-State Teams are comprised of players who participated on teams that were included in the CIF Division II bowl game enrollment divisions.
