Mater Dei had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders 26-23. The win was familiar territory for the Monarchs, who have now won 14 contests in a row dating back to last season.
A big part of Mater Dei's victory came down to the chemistry between Ryan Hopkins and his top target Chris Henry Jr.. Hopkins threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 12.3 yards per attempt while Henry Jr. picked up 135 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Henry Jr. really caught the secondary sleeping when he pulled down a catch that went for 81 yards.
Mater Dei didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of CJ Lavender Jr. and Ezekiel Su'a. Mater Dei got some further help from Shaun Scott: he picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made three total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Several Raiders players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Mason Mallory, who rushed for 89 yards and one TD, and also threw for 101 yards and one touchdown.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mater Dei will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Kahuku at 7:00 p.m. on September 5. As for St. Thomas Aquinas, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Boyd Anderson at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
