Basketball Recap: Morningside Academy Takes a Loss

After flying high against Dreyfoos School of the Arts on Monday, Morningside Academy came back down to earth. The Morningside Academy Eagles were just a bucket shy of victory on Tuesday and fell 54-53 to the St. Edward's Pirates. The Eagles haven't had much luck with the Pirates recently, as the team's come up short the last seven times they've met.

Morningside Academy's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was AJ Chang, who posted 26 points along with seven steals and six boards. With that strong performance, Chang is now averaging an impressive 15.2 points per game. Elijah Bell was another key player, going 6 for 14 on his way to 13 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals.

Even though they lost, Morningside Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in eight consecutive matches.

St. Edward's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Cody Simmonds, who dropped a double-double on 26 points and 11 boards. Simmonds is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayzere Cannon, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds.

Morningside Academy's loss dropped their record down to 9-7. As for St. Edward's, their record is now 7-3.

Morningside Academy will be playing in front of their home fans against Synergy Magnet K12 at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Morningside Academy is facing Synergy Magnet K12 at the right time seeing as Synergy Magnet K12 is stuck on an eight-game losing streak. St. Edward's has already played their next game (against Benjamin), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
