The Memorial Red Devils's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their fifth straight loss. They took a serious blow against Champion, falling 54-20. While losing is never fun, Memorial can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 759th, while Champion is ranked 123rd).
Despite the loss, Memorial still got an impressive performance from Diamon Sims, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds. Sims scored a full 70% of Memorial's points, the seventh time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Memorial struggled to work together and finished the game with only an assist. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Champion racked up nine assists.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Champion to victory, but perhaps none more so than Isabella Meyer, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds and four steals. The game was Meyer's seventh in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kayla Haynie, who scored 11 points along with four steals.
Memorial's loss was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 1-6. As for Champion, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 6-1.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Memorial's homestand continues as they prepare to take on Brookfield at 6:15 p.m. on December 21st. Champion will be home for the holidays to greet St. Joseph Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. St. Joseph Academy will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
