The East Hartford Hornets couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They took a 43-35 hit to the loss column at the hands of Newington on Tuesday. East Hartford lost against Newington in their previous head to head back in January, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 42-36 score last time.
Despite the loss, East Hartford still got an impressive performance from Zoe Mercado, who scored 19 points. Nia Edens was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Bela Cucuta was the offensive standout of the game as she scored 31 points along with four steals. Another player making a difference was Haylie Sanchez, who scored four points along with ten rebounds.
East Hartford's loss dropped their record down to 0-1. As for Newington, their win was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 1-0.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. East Hartford will square off against RHAM at 6:45 p.m. on Friday. As for Newington, they will head out on the road to face off against Edwin O. Smith at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
