V Section II recap Oct. 3, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Valley Christian, who took down 86th ranked San Tan Foothills, 27-12. Spencer Richardson ran for 29 yards and caught four passes for 79 yards in the win.
Adam Naverrette and Trey Lopez provided fans with a highlight when they connected against the Trojans. The longest such play in V Section II this season, the connection resulted in 81 yards.
Jagan Cleary put up the best numbers through the air as Yuma Catholic beat Santa Cruz Valley. He finished with six completions for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Cleary's favorite target this week was Donovan Rooks, who caught three passes for 92 yards.
Lopez was the best wideout in the league this week as the Sabercats fell to Valley Christian. Lopez tallied three receptions for 109 yards. Marius Bruce helped San Tan Foothills' passing attack out by catching two balls for 30 yards.
Alfred Erives was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 12 carries, he ran for 222 yards as Arizona Lutheran Academy fell to Kevin Allen's team. Teammate Kaleb Buchholz added to the ground attack by rushing for 79 yards.
Nicholas Zwemke made the biggest impact on defense this week as Tempe Prep topped Canyon State Academy. The 6-foot-2 sophomore recorded one fumble and racked up one sack.
Phoenix Christian's John Debus and Jordan Leary have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading V Section II in both passing and receiving yards. Debus has thrown for 1263 yards this season, while Leary has 25 catches for 474 yards. Erives from the Coyotes leads the league in rushing with 1259 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Northwest Christian takes on Arizona Lutheran Academy. At the moment, the Crusaders are in first, while Scott Indahl's team is in fifth.
Northwest Christian extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Cougars, 48-14. The victory was the sixth in a row for Dave Inness's team.
