The Shonto Prep Grizzlies's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their sixth straight loss. They lost to Whitehorse on the road by a decisive 60-41 margin. While losing is never fun, Shonto Prep can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 348th in Arizona, while Whitehorse is ranked 124th in Utah).
Whitehorse's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Dominic Dance led the charge by scoring 17 points. Those 17 points set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Lyric Phillips, who scored 14 points.
Shonto Prep's loss dropped their record down to 1-9. As for Whitehorse, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 5-5 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Shonto Prep will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Rock Point at 5:30 p.m. on January 11, 2024. Whitehorse's road trip will continue as they head out to face Pinnacle at 7:00 p.m. on January 5, 2024. Hopefully Pinnacle focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Wednesday.
