The Irwin County Indians lost a heartbreaker to the Wilcox County Patriots when they met back in February of 2023, and they left with a heavy heart again on Tuesday. Irwin County fell just short of Wilcox County by a score of 52-49. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss Irwin County has suffered since December 1, 2023.
Irwin County's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sam Guy, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 20 rebounds. Guy has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last 18 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Jaylen Martin, who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Irwin County's loss dropped their record down to 6-17. As for Wilcox County, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-12.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Irwin County will square off against Pelham at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Wilcox County is on the road again on Thursday and plays Macon County at 7:30 p.m. on February 8th. Macon County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past 17 matchups -- so hopefully Wilcox County likes a good challenge.
