4A Northern recap Sept. 26, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Niwot, who took down 70th ranked Greeley West, 14-10. Nathan Merriman threw for 217 yards and one touchdown in the win.
The Cougars were the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to sixth in 4A Northern. Niwot beat the Spartans 14-10 earlier in the week.
Mountain View's dynamic duo of Adam Baumann and Tyler Kress proved tough for Longmont to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Baumann threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns and Kress had 116 yards receiving. Austin Ryan helped Mountain View's passing attack out by catching two balls for 56 yards.
Sean McAvoy made the biggest impact on defense this week as Windsor defeated Thompson Valley. The 5-foot-10 senior recorded two fumbles and grabbed one sack.
Travis Lechman was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 12 carries, he ran for 175 yards as Greeley Central lost to the Trojans. Teammate Andres Ortega added to the ground attack by rushing for 41 yards.
6-foot-2 quarterback Merriman of Josh Brewer's team is the league leader in passing yards this season with 837. He has also thrown four touchdowns. On the ground, Mountain View's Jeremiah Clymer has rushed for 504 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Josh Sandin. The Mountain View star has 14 catches for 230 yards.
A big matchup in 4A Northern this week will be when Longmont takes on the Wizards. As it stands, Doug Johnson's team is in fifth, while Windsor is in first.
Chris Jones's team took down the Eagles 41-8 last week, the largest margin of any game. Joe Sanger threw for 32 yards and ran for 102 yards in the win.
