Walnut had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They really took it to the Garey Vikings for the full four quarters, racking up a 37-7 victory. The Mustangs haven't had any issues with the Vikings recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Walnut got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Christopher Mardueno out in front who rushed for 63 yards and one touchdown on only seven carries. Mardueno also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, making three total tackles and defending one pass in addition to snagging an interception. Nohlen Simons was another key player, having thrown for 260 yards and two touchdowns.
Most of the squad's points came courtesy of special teams, who contributed 19 in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Jacob (JRod) Rodriguez, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.
