The Fairmont Senior Polar Bears are taking a road trip to face off against the Elkins Tigers at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Fairmont Senior is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
While Fairmont Senior's win against North Marion wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Polar Bears won by a run and slipped past the Huskies 4-3. The Polar Bears haven't had any issues with the Huskies recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.
Brayden Gorby spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up seven Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Fairmont Senior saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cole Sammons, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Logan Canfield was another, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Elkins came out on top against Robert C. Byrd on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run fifth inning. The Tigers blew past the Eagles 9-3.
Andrew Hinzman was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Those seven strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Dyer Barger was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Trevor Hogue, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Fairmont Senior's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-3. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Elkins, their record now sits at 5-16.
Fairmont Senior's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's contest. The Polar Bears have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Elkins, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Fairmont Senior continue to outrun the ball?
Fairmont Senior skirted past Elkins 4-3 in their previous matchup back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Polar Bears since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
