The Phillipsburg Stateliners will take on the Vernon Vikings at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Phillipsburg sitting on 20 straight victories and Vernon on three.
Last Thursday, Phillipsburg made easy work of Bound Brook and carried off a 63-37 victory. Given Phillipsburg's advantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey basketball rankings (they are ranked 11th, while Bound Brook is ranked 131st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Phillipsburg relied on the efforts of Andrew Martin, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds, and Matthew Scerbo jr., who scored 25 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Scerbo jr. hasn't dropped below 17 points for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Ameer Herran, who scored eight points along with 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Tuesday Vernon sidestepped Jefferson Township for a 49-46 victory.
Phillipsburg's victory was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 20-1. As for Vernon, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season.
